It is the largest city in the Middle East and in Africa and lies at the centre of all routes leading to and from the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe. On its East Side stands the evidence of 2000 years of Islamic, Christian Coptic and Jewish culture still flourishing to this day. On its West Side lies the Ancient Egyptian city of Memphis (Giza), the renowned capital of the Old Kingdom and the site of the Pyramids, the only of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World still surviving. This evening we will enjoy a delicious welcome dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast we will continue with a tour of Cairo including an exclusive visit to the glorious Presidential Palace for afternoon tea. We will visit the Citadel situated on a spur of the Muqattam Hills; this was the nerve centre of the city and all of Egypt for almost 700 years. Its construction, initiated in 1176 by Saladin, was completed by Muhammad Ali. Mameluke sultans and Turkish governors made it their residence, building palaces and mosques within the Citadel walls. Facing the Citadel is the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, built between 1356 and 1363 and perhaps the most majestic monument of Arab architecture in Egypt. This evening we will enjoy an informative and fun traditional cooking class with dinner.

After breakfast we transfer back to the Cairo Airport for our flight to Luxor. Upon arrival, we transfer to our ship, our floating hotel for the next 4 nights as we cruise up the Nile. We check-in in time for a sumptuous lunch on board.
Luxor is a city often been called the “world’s greatest open-air museum.” The sheer number of preserved monuments in the area is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Luxor is composed of three different areas: the city of Luxor – located on the east side of the Nile, the town of Karnak, located just north of Luxor, and Thebes which is on the west side of the Nile across from Luxor. After lunch, we visit the East Bank and discover the glories of the Luxor and Karnak Temples, a holy city of pylons, hypostyle halls, colossal statues and obelisks built over many centuries, dedicated to the God Amon Ra, his consort Mut and their son Khonsu. After our visit, we return to our ship for afternoon tea. Tonight, we enjoy dinner including an evening of entertainment with belly dancing and an Egyptian folkloric show.

Day 11Excursion to Jerash & Ajloun

This morning we travel to the ancient city of Jerash to see the remarkable remains from Neolithic times, as well as Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Omayyad and others. Conquered by General Pompey in 63 BC, it came under Roman rule and was one of the ten great Roman cities. The site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. After lunch at a local Lebanese restaurant, we take a short hop northwest to Ajloun traveling through pine forests and olive groves while passing scores of ancient sites, including water mills, forts and villages. Ajloun Castle (Qal’at Ar-Rabad) was built in 1184 AD to control the iron mines of Ajloun, and to deter the Franks from invading Ajloun. The castle dominated the three main routes leading to the valley and protected the trade and commercial routes between Jordan and Syria. It became an important link in the defensive chain against the Crusaders, who unsuccessfully, spent decades trying to capture the castle. We will stop for a local lunch at a Social Enterprise. This “restaurant” allows local women to support themselves by serving authentic meals and products from Jordan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12Amman - Madaba - Dead Sea

After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and drive to Madaba, known as the City of Mosaics for the famous mosaic map on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. It is the oldest map in the world depicting the Holy Land. From there we will continue to Mt. Nebo, the mountaintop memorial to Moses, who stood on the mount overlooking the Promised Land of Israel. We will continue our journey down to the Dead Sea and will have time to relax and enjoy the facilities of our Resort including mud wraps, and a float in the Dead Sea.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 14Full Day Petra

After breakfast, we have a full day to spend exploring the wonders of Petra. UNESCO described Petra as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage”. Archaeological evidence suggests that Petra was inhabited from as early as 7000-6500 B.C, however, it is believed that the city was established by the Nabataeans around 312 BC. It is because of the Nabataeans that Petra has become world famous for the incredible architecture that was carved into the walls of a hidden desert canyon. It remained unknown to the Western world until 1912 when Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt discovered it. An excellent walking destination, the only transportation available in Petra is by camel, donkey or horse. Be amazed by the magnificent Siq, the main road that leads to the Treasury originally built as a mausoleum and crypt beginning in the first century AD. Be sure not to miss the fascinating Royal Tombs and Roman Theatre. After our day at Petra, we will spend the evening learning to make traditional Middle Eastern dishes such as baba ghanoush, fattoush and hummus and the best part is we then get to enjoy all the dishes that we help create!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 15Petra to Wadi Rum

After breakfast, we board our coach for the drive to Wadi Rum. Wadi Rum is also known as The Valley of the Moon. While the word “wadi” means valley in Arabic, many believe that “rum” most likely comes from an Aramaic root word meaning high or elevated. This region is very isolated and remains relatively untouched by humans. The only permanent inhabitants are Bedouin nomads. We take the afternoon to explore Wadi Rum in 4×4 Jeeps. After our adventure, we will drive back to Amman for our final night in Jordan and to enjoy a farewell dinner at the Lebanese House Restaurant in Amman.

Accommodation: Amman Al-Qasr Metropole Hotel (1 Night)

Day 16Depart Amman

Today after breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and transfer to the airport for our flight back home.
