Big Five President’s Pick: Uganda & Kenya
Uganda to Kenya | 12 Days | Contact us for Departure Options
This adventure goes in search of some of the largest land animals left on Earth – from the rare mountain gorilla to the African elephant – both highly threatened species. It also travels into an indigenous pygmy village of the Batwa, who have been known historically as the keepers of the forest, the original dwellers of Uganda’s Bwindi Forest. I am impressed by their amazing knowledge of the plants and animals that has been gained over millennia. Search for the big cats and the tiny bush babes in two stunning Kenya locations. This is a traditional safari that will go beyond your Africa expectations.

24 Hours a Day: Every guest receives complimentary enrollment in our 24-hour White Glove Service® guest assistance program. A team of specialists using proprietary software to track your progress is available 365 days from anywhere in the world. WGS® starts two weeks before your departure to help with anything from concierge services to travel emergencies. We proactively call every guest from North America to check in and assist with requests such as checking local weather; dealing with lost luggage or cancelled flights; or even the rare medical emergency. In the last 18 months, we have proactively reached out by telephone to our guests on tour to welcome them or assist with specific requests almost 1,500 times… and counting.
Ahead of the Crowds: Our Destination Specialists combine creativity with their impressive knowledge. As a result, we are on average two years or more ahead of the pack when it comes to new and innovative travel ideas. We focus on lesser known unique touring activities and emerging concepts that are not yet mainstream. We forge paths and take risks few others are willing to because we are committed to the principles of authenticity and sustainability. Most tour companies rely on an in-country counterpart for product ideas. At Big Five, we don’t wait for anyone else. In 30 of our 44 destinations, and counting, we pioneered the itineraries and activities that are well ahead of current trends, and have taught our ground team, who actually live in those countries. We invest in our team, constantly sending them out to find new experiences that most overseas companies are unaware of because they rarely leave their home territories.
Booking in North America vs Booking Overseas: Before you work directly with a company overseas, look closely to insure you are comparing apples, and not grapes to kumquats. What appears to be a $1,000 price difference, actually is almost at par when you add in all the “extra fees” overseas companies put in their fine print. We don’t charge merchant fees for using a credit card, most overseas companies will charge you 3% or more to pay by credit card. Your Big Five journey comes with complimentary enrollment in our 24-hour White Glove Service® guest assistance program up to 2 weeks before your departure; something no overseas company has the ability or capacity to do. We usually have more inclusions with fewer “optional” activities. You are backed by a comprehensive liability coverage plan that was written and is operated in North America. Booking overseas leaves you in the hands of the liability coverage that is written and operated in the country you are visiting, following local rules and guidelines, which may not be known to you. Make sure your apples are really apples – otherwise it might cost you more than just money.
Sustainability at the heart of every grand adventure: We believe in a sustainable future for all. Big Five has been consistently recognized as a leader in the sustainable travel, receiving accolades for our work to help change the world through travel. Big Five has also been honored by an internationally recognized travel network as the only company to twice receive an award for Sustainable Leadership after being judged against nearly 100 other companies by two separate independent panels. Early this morning, you are transferred from your hotel to the Entebbe International Airport for your scheduled flight to Kisoro. You are met at the Kisoro Airstrip by the lodge driver-guide, who transfers almost two hours to your safari lodge.
This afternoon you visit the indigenous Batwa tribe. Bwindi Forest is home to a fantastic diversity of flora and fauna, including some exotic plants and rare and endangered animals. The forest is also home to the Batwa pygmies. These people were the original dwellers of the ancient forest and have been known as the ‘keepers of the forest’. The Batwa lived in harmony with the forest and survived by hunting small game using bows and arrows and gathering plants for both food and medicinal purposes.
In 1992, the lives of the Batwa changed forever when the forest became a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site to try to protect the endangered mountain gorillas that reside within its boundaries. The Batwa were evicted from the park and became what is now known as “conservation refugees” in a world that was very unfamiliar to them. Their skills and means of
subsistence were not useful in this modern environment and they began to suffer.
In 2001, when the Batwa tribe was on the edge of extinction American medical missionaries, Dr Scott and Carol Kellermann,
came to their rescue. They purchased land and established programs to improve the conditions and lives of the Batwa. This
included the building of a school, hospital and housing. The Kellermanns also developed water and sanitation projects and found ways that the Batwa could generate income and sustain themselves. These projects are now managed and operated by the Batwa Development Program (BDP). BDP works closely with the Batwa community to try to ensure that their indigenous rights are respected, and they also benefit from the forest being a national park.
The Batwa Cultural Experience was created by the displaced Batwa pygmies with the help of BDP to educate their children and to share their amazing heritage and traditions with the world. A day spent with the Batwa gives you the opportunity to experience the forest through the eyes of your Batwa guide. Learn how they lived and hunted in the traditional manner as the Batwa teaches you techniques to shoot with a bow and arrow. Visit a traditional Batwa homestead to learn from the women how to prepare, cook and serve a meal – Batwa-style. You have the chance to sample these dishes. Engage with a medicine man and learn about the medicinal properties that the forest flora. Listen to the ancient legends and myths and traditional songs.

Today is Gorilla trekking day! After breakfast, take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with excellent local guides and trackers who will give a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. Then hike into the forest where the gorillas were seen the night before and track from that point. The trekking can take from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes not in excess of 7,500 feet.
The terrain is rough and at times muddy. Although the hike is physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trekking worthwhile. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. Picnic lunches are provided, and it is important to take plenty of water. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film are recommended. It can rain at a few minutes’ notice; hence waterproof clothing is a good essential.
Note: Under no circumstances are gorillas to be touched by humans. This is to protect them from communicable diseases, to which they are very susceptible. Any traveler with an obvious cold or other communicable illness will not be allowed to participate in the treks. Children under 15 cannot participate. The lodge has activities for them.

This morning you fly back to Nairobi, where you are welcomed and transferred to your hotel where Big Five has reserved a dayroom at the Ole Sereni Hotel for your convenience. Later this afternoon, enjoy a special visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, overlooking Nairobi National Park. The elephant and rhino orphanage is run by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
The late David Sheldrick stands out, even today, as one of Africa’s most famous and proficient Pioneer National Park Wardens
of all time. With just one vehicle, and a handful of laborers, he was given the task of transforming a huge chunk of inhospitable arid land, previously uncharted and known only as the Taru Desert, into what today is Kenya’s largest and most famous National Park – Tsavo. His wife Daphne Sheldrick was the first person in the entire world to successfully hand rear newborn fully milk dependent African Elephant orphans, a task that spanned 28 years of trial and error to achieve. By the year 2008, the Trust had successfully saved and hand-reared over 82 infant African Elephant calves, two from the day of birth. A tiny newborn elephant is
orphaned often when its mother and family gunned down to serve the ivory trade, and any survivors flee in terror. With its life support gone, its fate now suffering and death in hopeless and lonely isolation that the animal cannot understand. For elephants, family is as important to as our family is to us. Its very existence is dependent upon its mother’s milk for the first two
years of life. It has a life span equivalent to that of man. In a perfect world that elephant life would be filled with fun and joy through the companionship of friends and a close-knit and loving family, whose love is pure and unconditional all the days of its life.
Big Five believes and champions the trust’s mission. We foster an orphan in your name, and this allows you to savor a visit to the orphanage when it is open only to fellow foster donors. As the expert handlers introduce the lively elephant and rhino orphans and feeding time begins, you will have a close encounter with these delightful little creatures, some may approach you to be
stroked.
This evening after dinner, you are transferred to the Nairobi airport in time to connect your onward flight to your next destination. With that we must say Kwaheri” (Swahili goodbye) as you depart Nairobi later this morning.
