Reasons to visit the Marquesas Islands
When thinking of French Polynesia, most travelers will conjure up images of Bora Bora and the Society Islands. If you’re wanting a South Pacific, French Polynesian experience that’s a little bit off the beaten path, then we suggest cruising to the Marquesas Islands. These islands have towering cliffs, black sand beaches and rushing waterfalls.
1. The Omoa Petroglyphs
Hike through the native forest of Omoa, Fatu Hiva and discover important petroglyphs in the middle of all this wonderful scenery. Be transported back to another era when you see famous rock carvings of men, fish, tikis and canoes. This is also a wonderful way to explore the Omoa Valley.
2. An abundance of Marine Life
Advanced divers will love the Marquesas! The islands are home to some spectacular dive sites, ideal for those eager to get in the water. See scalloped hammerhead sharks, moray eels, manta rays, shoals of colourful fish and more. This tropical paradise is your diving dream, with turquoise blue waters and an amazing variety of marine life.
3. The lush Taipivai Valley
Follow in Herman Melville’s footsteps as you explore the Taipivai Valley. Melville lived in the valley for three weeks, after being captured by the native people, and consequently used this experience as inspiration for his novel Typee. The area is full of green mountain terrain and picture-perfect views of the coastline. It is also home to numerous important archaeological sites.
4. The drive from Omoa to Hanavave
There are only two towns on Fatu Hiva, and there is only one road that connects them. See them both by taking a 4×4 drive across the island, and discover a world of lush jungle and dramatic coastlines. This drive is ideal for photography enthusiasts as there are many photo opportunities along the way.
The perfect way to see any of the islands in the South Pacific is to cruise with Paul Gauguin Cruises. The Marquesas Islands are featured on their Marquesas, Tuamotus & Society Islands departures. And isn’t that great? You don’t just get to see the Marquesas, but also the beautiful lagoons and crystal blue waters of the Society Islands. This is one romantic vacation you need to take!
