Cruising The Danube with Avalon Waterways
Last November, Wendy & Bruce embarked on a Festive Danube Cruise with Avalon Waterways. After hearing their thoughts on the trip, we have rounded up all the things you need to know about this particular cruise.
• The Atmosphere: Calm, relaxed and easy.
One thing that you’ll notice about river cruising is that there is no rush to do anything. You can decide what you do and don’t do – excursions are optional and mealtimes have open seating. There is a sense of closeness between guests onboard because of the size of the ship – everything is easy to find, and you will meet different people each night.
• The Food: Hearty, well-balanced meals.
Avalon makes sure that every meal you eat is full of all the nutrients you need. Get ready for a day of adventuring by tucking into their buffet breakfast (a range of prepared meats, bread, yogurts and fruit), order eggs just the way you like them or something special off the menu. Lunch is a similar set-up but dinner is where you get the best, immaculately-presented dishes.
• The Traveller: Active, able-bodied individuals.
The demographic of travelers onboard a Danube River Cruise is generally 50 years and over. However, shore excursions involve a lot of walking on cobble-stoned streets (wear the right footwear for this!) and standing around listening to local guides spill the city’s secrets. For this reason, we recommend that travelers wanting to embark on this cruise are fit, healthy and active.
• The Panorama Suites: Windows to the outside.
One of the highlights of any Avalon Cruise is their re-configured Panorama Suites. They’ve switched up the traditional room set-up by turning the bed to face out towards the river. Not only this, but they have taken away the small balconies and transformed the whole wall into a glass window – filling your bedroom with light, panoramic views and a magical feeling of being outside.
• The Destination: Full of romance and history.
Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a classic historian, you will find everything you’re looking for in these European cities. Take a World War 2 tour of Nuremberg and see the remains of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. When in Vienna, make sure you book to see a concert – enjoy music, ballet and opera in stunning venues for a nostalgic taste of the Romantic and Classical eras.
