From rainforest walks to a plethora of beaches, a trip to Sri Lanka is guaranteed to be worth your while. If you’re not sure where to start, here is our suggested route!
-
Colombo
Colombo will naturally be your first port of call as international flights will arrive here. It is also Sri Lanka’s commercial capital so is worth spending some time in. There is plenty to see and do – walk past colonial buildings, take a visit to the Colombo National Museum, hop on a Tuk Tuk Safari and enjoy the beautiful ocean views.
-
Anuradhapura
One of Sri Lanka’s ancient cities, Anuradhapura, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site but has lower visitor numbers than you would expect. It’s a must-do though – from the Sacred Bo Tree to temple ruins and towering dagobas – there is a never-ending mixture of sights to see. Exploring these magical sights is best done by bike rental or Tuk Tuk. Allow one or two days here to fully discover everything this relaxed city has to offer.
-
Sigiriya
If you want to see one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive sights, take a trip to Sigiriya. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is an amazing rock fortress that rises towards the clouds. Due to its height, collection of frescoes, and water gardens (that architects are still puzzled by today), Sigiriya is often names the Eighth Wonder of the World.
-
Kandy
There is an ethereal quality to Kandy. The city looks too good to be true with it’s colorful houses that line the tranquil Kandy Lake. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, a well-known Buddhist temple that houses a tooth of the Buddha, and enjoy the countryside sunsets accompanied with good food from Kandy’s great selection of restaurants.
-
Nuwara Eliya
Take the train from Kandy and reach Nuwara Eliya. See beautiful views of tea plantations and mountains as you travel. Once you arrive at your destination, you will see the British influence from the 19th century.
-
Pasikuda
-For some beach time, head to Pasikuda. Here, the majority of beaches are untouched and are accompanied with turquoise waters. Brush up on your snorkeling or scuba diving skills, or simply grab your beach towel, lay back and relax.
